Day 7 - Housekeeping, Staten Island, China Town & Macys

Today was a late start to our explorations of the city.  Housekeeping duties were the order of the morning, with washing high on the agenda.  The girls reckon that the Laundry at the apartments is something to behold - so behold....

Chores completed, we head downtown on a Red 1 subway train and take the Staten Island ferry to .....Staten Island!  To say that the island was a disappointment would be like saying that the Raiders have been slightly disappointing this season - a total understatement.  Staten island is a HOLE, and anyone contemplating a visit to New York should place it on top of their list of places NOT to bother with.  It is run down and depressed and falls well short of the high standards we have come to expect from NYC.

Below is a photo of the best part of the island ...the ferry leaving to go back to Manhattan.

And we were so pleased to be leaving that we had the US Coast Guard (complete with fully automatic machine gun) escort us all the way back to New York.

Chinatown was the venue for lunch and we dined on authentic Chow food.  Then a short subway ride to Macys department store. It is so big, I am sure that some of the departments in Macy's have their own postcodes. I can honestly say that in the past week we have only been lost twice - and both times it was in Macys.  Helen even asked the checkout attendant for a map of the store. The place is so big that it is a real struggle to find anything - but when you do, the rewards are there - range and prices are exceptional. Brian and Rod both made purchases and have done their bit for the struggling US economy.

A visit to Emmett O'Lunneys Irish Pub on the way home was a real disappointment - warm beer and rubbish wine, so it now sits second on the list of not to do.

We remedied the situation by calling in to the West End Bar & Grill (now our local) before heading home for a light dinner.

All in all a day of slight disappointment.  If yesterday was diamonds, then today was stone - well maybe a cubic zirconia.

More tomorrow - our last day in NYC.
