I recall a song that goes, "They Said We'd Never Make It".
Tuesday 3rd May 2011 was the longest day EVER, and at one stage I feared we MIGHT never make it.
It started for the Roaches at 7am on Tuesday, and ended at 3:30 am on Wednesday - I know that doesn't seem such a long time, but when you add in the 14 hours we lost along the way, it totals some 34+ hours - officially a BLOODY LONG DAY.
There wasn't a lot of sleep had en route, so day 1 was a travelling day with four exhausted explorers hitting the diner across from our apartment block at 1:30am for a late dinner of burgers (and the mandatory fries), omelet (with fried potatoes) and burritos (with fried potatoes) washed down with a couple of brews and a couple of Sauvignon Blancs before heading off for a full four hours of refreshing sleep before we unleash on New York.
Hence - this blog is being written upon reflection - on the morning of day 2. I am sorry I was tardy and did not complete my homework (blog) yesterday - I promise it won't happen again. I WILL write my blog every night.
We are all very impressed so far. The city is clean and the apartment is good (albeit we are staying in separate one bedroom apartments for the first night as the two bedder we had booked was unavailable due to"plumbing issues"). We hope to move to that apartment on Thursday. Everyone is very friendly and we feel very welcome.
The views from our rooms are great. We are on west 53rd Street near the corner of 11th Avenue in Skycity Apartments. From the Pyne's 29th floor window we look southwest over the Hudson River to New Jersey and beyond. The Roaches view from the 7th floor is the same, though 22 floors of extra height sure adds another dimension.
Although rain is forecast, the morning brings fresh new views and challenges ahead. The four hours sleep we managed overnight should be enough to recharge the batteries and get us through the day.
We are planning an orientation morning first up - get the bearings, find the red tourist bus stop, etc etc.
Took a few snaps on day 1 and we will upload these soon. Haven't had time to scratch the proverbials since we landed, so will attend to those chores a little later.
Love to all back in OZ.
R, H, B & M.
